Dr. Jinwei Sun, composer, conductor, and pianist. Her academic journey commenced with a specialization in Asian music at UC Santa Cruz, culminating in the attainment of her doctorate. She also holds a Bachelor's degree from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and a Master's degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
As a composer, Dr. Sun's work has garnered widespread recognition through collaborations with ensembles such as the Del Sol Quartet, International Contemporary Ensemble, and Ensemble Dal Niente. She has also collaborated with virtuoso performers, including Dan Bau virtuoso Hoc Bic, Dan Tranh virtuoso Van Anh Vo, Haegeum virtuoso Soo-Yeon Lyuh, Gayageum virtuoso Aeri Ji, Jung-Min Song, and Guitar virtuoso Dan Lippel, among others. Notably, major orchestras have performed her compositions, including a recent performance with the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra (SCSO).
Over the years, Dr Sun has been guided by esteemed mentors, including Lei Liang, Brian Ferneyhough, Cindy Cox, HiKyung Kim, and Xiaofu Zhang, each contributing significantly to her artistic development and innovation.
In addition to her compositional pursuits, Dr. Sun is an accomplished performer and conductor, gracing the stages of renowned venues such as Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall on multiple occasions.
Dr. Sun's commitment to expanding the accessibility of music across diverse communities is evident through her collaborations with nonprofit organizations in Queens. Her efforts have earned her recognition and a Point of Light Award from Neil Bush, underscoring her significant contributions to the field.
Currently, she serves as Composer in Residence at North-Cal Youth Orchestra at Ignite Music Society.
